What’s on the AP Calculus BC exam

The AP Calculus BC exam splits evenly into two sections. Section I is 45 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 45 minutes, worth 50%: Part A is 30 questions in 60 minutes with no calculator, and Part B is 15 questions in 45 minutes where a graphing calculator is required. Section II is 6 free-response questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, also 50%: Part A is 2 questions in 30 minutes with a calculator, and Part B is 4 questions in 60 minutes without one.

BC is essentially AB plus more — it adds infinite series, parametric, polar, and vector functions, and extra integration techniques, and it reports a separate AB subscore. AP Calculus BC is organized into ten units — the eight from AB plus two that define BC: parametric/polar/vector functions and infinite series. Integration and series are the two heaviest.

2. Differentiation: Definition & Fundamental Properties (4–7%)
The limit definition of the derivative and the power, product, and quotient rules.
3. Differentiation: Composite, Implicit & Inverse Functions (4–7%)
The chain rule, implicit differentiation, and inverse derivatives.
4. Contextual Applications of Differentiation (6–9%)
Motion, related rates, linear approximation, and L’Hôpital’s rule.
5. Analytical Applications of Differentiation (8–11%)
Increasing/decreasing, concavity, the Mean Value Theorem, and optimization.
6. Integration and Accumulation of Change (17–20%)
The Fundamental Theorem, Riemann sums, and u-substitution — a heaviest unit.
7. Differential Equations (6–9%)
Slope fields, separation of variables, Euler’s method, and logistic growth.
8. Applications of Integration (6–9%)
Average value, area, volume, and arc length.
9. Parametric, Polar & Vector Functions (11–12%)
Differentiating and integrating parametric, polar, and vector-valued functions.

How AP Calculus BC is scored

Your multiple-choice and free-response points combine into one composite score, which the College Board scales to a 1–5 each year, and BC also reports an AB subscore based on the AB-level questions. BC is one of the highest-scoring AP exams: in 2024, 80.9% of students scored a 3 or higher, 47.7% earned a 5, and the mean was 3.92 — though that partly reflects a strong, self-selecting group of students, not an easy exam.
