The exam in numbers

How the 2027 AP Calculus AB exam is scored

The exam has two sections of equal weight, and calculator use splits each one. Section I gives you 1 hour 40 minutes for 42 multiple-choice questions: 29 in Part A with no calculator (35% of your score), then 13 in Part B, where some questions need a graphing calculator (15%). Section II gives you 1 hour 30 minutes for six free-response questions, each scored out of 9: two in Part A with a graphing calculator (16.7%), then four in Part B without one (33.3%).

Section I is the multiple choice and Section II the free response. Part B of Section I needs the calculator for some questions, not all.

I, Part B: graphing calculator1338 min15%
II, Part A: graphing calculator230 min16.7%
II, Part B: no calculator460 min33.3%

On this calculator a right multiple-choice answer adds 1.286 to the 108-point composite score and a free-response point adds 1, so one answer is worth about 1.3 free-response points. Both sections top out at 54.

New for 2027

What changed on the 2027 exam

For the May 2027 exam, College Board trimmed the multiple choice. Part A went from 30 questions in 60 minutes to 29 in 62, and Part B from 15 questions in 45 minutes to 13 in 38, so Section I is now 42 questions in 1 hour 40 minutes. The free response is unchanged, and so is the course content.

The exam is also hybrid digital. The multiple choice is answered on screen in Bluebook, College Board’s testing app, which also shows the free-response prompts; the answers to those are handwritten in a paper booklet that is sent back for scoring. The whole exam takes 3 hours 10 minutes.

The eight units and their share of the multiple choice

College Board sets a weighting for each unit in the multiple-choice section. Applying derivatives and integration carry the most, at 15% to 20% each:

UnitShare of the multiple choice
Unit 1: Limits and Continuity10–15%
Unit 2: Differentiation: Definition and Basic Derivative Rules10–15%
Unit 3: Differentiation: Composite, Implicit, and Inverse Functions5–10%
Unit 4: Contextual Applications of Differentiation10–15%
Unit 5: Applying Derivatives to Analyze Functions15–20%
Unit 6: Integration and Accumulation of Change15–20%
Unit 7: Differential Equations5–10%
Unit 8: Applications of Integration10–15%

Each unit is taught in our AP Calc AB units guide.

Old format, old answers

Why most AP Calc AB score calculators are a year behind

For 2027, College Board cut the multiple-choice section from 45 questions to 42. Of the 15 Calc AB score calculators we checked in US search results on October 1, 2026, 12 still ask for your score out of 45.

A score out of 42 goes in without an error, but those tools count each answer as 54/45 = 1.2 composite points instead of 54/42, so 30 right answers come out as 36.0 instead of 38.6. That drops exactly two answers’ worth of points before your free response is even added. This calculator uses the 2027 structure: 42 questions at 1.286 each, and six free-response questions out of 9.

Scoring an older 45-question exam

Exams written before 2027 have 45 multiple-choice questions. Scale a 45-question multiple-choice raw score to 42 before you enter it: 36 right out of 45 becomes 33.6 out of 42, so enter 34. The free-response questions are still scored out of 9, so enter those as they are.

The line for a 5

What score do you need for a 5 on AP Calc AB?

Our estimated line for a 5 is a composite score of 69.3 out of 108, 64% of the points. A 4 starts at 48.8, a 3 at 37.5 and a 2 at 15.7. These are estimates: College Board doesn’t publish raw-score cutoffs, so no calculator can promise its lines match.

Our estimate, not College Board’s. The last column assumes 24 of 54 free-response points, College Board’s 2025 averages rounded.
AP scoreComposite (of 108)From % of pointsMultiple-choice answers needed with an average free response

337.5 to 48.735%11 of 42
215.7 to 37.415%none
1below 15.7––

Here is what that means in answers. College Board’s 2025 free-response averages, rounded, add up to 24 of 54 points. With 24, this calculator needs 36 of the 42 multiple-choice questions for a 5, 20 for a 4 and 11 for a 3, and the 24 alone already clears the line for a 2.

Either section on its own gets you to the middle. All 42 multiple-choice answers with no free response makes a composite of 54, a 4 on our estimate, and so does a perfect free response with no multiple choice.

College Board’s scoring statistics

The six free-response questions: what College Board’s averages show

Each year College Board reports how many of the 9 points students averaged on each free-response question. No question has averaged even 5 of 9 in the last three years, so a self-scored 7 or 8 deserves a second look.

College Board describes the free response as a roughly even split of procedural and conceptual work, with at least two questions set in a real-world context. The lowest average in that stretch was 2.07, on question 3 in 2023; the highest was 4.82, on question 3 in 2025. The 2025 questions covered average and instantaneous rates of change, area and volume, a trapezoidal-sum estimate, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, a particle’s motion and related rates. The 2026 set asked about birds arriving at a nesting site, the area and volume of two regions, a pie cooling on a table, the graph of a function, a toy car’s velocity and a twice-differentiable function. College Board hasn’t posted 2026 averages yet.

Calculator rules

Calculator rules for the 2027 exam

College Board lists two parts as calculator required, Part B of the multiple choice and Part A of the free response, and a calculator isn’t allowed in the other two.

Bluebook has a Desmos graphing calculator built in, and on the Calculus AB exam it opens only in those calculator parts. You may also have up to two handheld graphing calculators, and only models on College Board’s approved list. College Board expects four things of the calculator: graph a function in any window, find its zeros, and work out derivatives and definite integrals numerically.

One rule is easy to miss. When a free-response answer comes from the calculator, write down the setup: the equation you solved, or the derivative or integral you evaluated. The number alone doesn’t earn full credit.

What your score means

Is a 3 or a 4 on AP Calculus AB good?

Yes, both count. College Board’s labels call a 3 qualified, a 4 very well qualified and a 5 extremely well qualified, and in 2026, 48% of AP Calculus AB students reached a 4 or a 5.

Calculus BC

Taking Calculus BC? Your AB subscore

If you take the BC exam instead, you also get a Calculus AB subscore on the same 1 to 5 scale, based on the AB content within BC.

Subscores run high: in 2025, 47.7% of the 160,953 BC students earned a 5 on the AB subscore, with a mean of 4.11, and in 2024 the share was 50.1%. You can’t take both the AB and BC exams in the same year, and this calculator scores the AB exam, not the subscore.

How the numbers work

How this AP Calculus AB score calculator estimates your score

The composite is the exact part. The calculator weights your multiple-choice answers and free-response points so each section is weighted at 54 of the 108 points, as College Board’s 50/50 split requires. What it can’t check is how you scored yourself. AP readers award a point only when the guidelines’ condition for it is met, and self-scored free response that runs a point or two high per question is the most common reason a prediction overshoots.

The 1 to 5 is an estimate. There is no official conversion table. College Board’s exams are criterion referenced, which means your score reflects the standard your work reaches, not your rank among this year’s test takers. College Board converts each year’s composites so that a 3 means the same as the year before, and it re-checks each subject’s standards every 5 to 10 years.

Our lines come from one model. If composites formed a bell shape centered on 44% of the points, the share of points students earned on College Board’s 2025 free response, with a spread of 24%, close to what its 2025 per-question figures imply, then 20% of students would sit above 69.3, 48% above 48.8, 65% above 37.5 and 89% above 15.7. Those four figures match College Board’s 2026 results: 20% scored 5, 48% scored 4 or higher, 65% scored 3 or higher and 89% scored 2 or higher. The multiple-choice average isn’t published, so we assume it matches the free response, and the line for a 2 is the least certain of the four.

Near a line, treat the result as a range: within about 3 composite points of a cutoff, either score is possible.

Why AP Calc AB score calculators disagree

Two settings explain most of the gap. The first is the multiple choice: tools built for the old exam count each answer at 1.2 instead of 1.286. The second is the cutoffs. The ones we checked mostly agree on a 5, between 68 and 70 of 108, but put a 4 anywhere from 51 to 58 and a 3 from 35 to 45. Some reuse scoring sheets from earlier exams, so the same scores can come back as a 3 from one tool and a 4 from another.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers, checked against College Board.

What percent is a 5 on AP Calc AB?

Two answers, depending on the question. In 2026, 20% of AP Calculus AB students earned a 5. On this calculator a 5 starts at 69.3 of 108 composite points, 64% of the total. College Board publishes no cutoff, so that line is our estimate.

Is 70% a 5 on AP Calc AB?

On this calculator, yes: 70% of 108 is 75.6, comfortably past our 69.3 line, and about 70% of each section, 29 of 42 multiple-choice answers and 38 of 54 free-response points, makes 75.3, also a 5.

How many multiple-choice questions do you need right for a 5?

It depends on your free response. With 40 of 54 free-response points you need 23 of 42; with 30 you need 31; with College Board’s 2025 average, about 24, you need 36.

Is there an AP Calc AB curve?

No. College Board’s AP Calculus AB and BC Course and Exam Description calls AP Exams criterion referenced rather than graded on a curve, so a student who reaches the standard for a 4 gets a 4 no matter how many others reach it too. Exam forms differ from year to year, and College Board converts composites to the 1–5 scale so that this year’s 3 means what last year’s 3 meant. It publishes no cutoffs, which makes every Calc AB cutoff online, ours included, an estimate.

Is a 4 on AP Calculus AB good?

Yes, a 4 is a good score. College Board calls a 4 “very well qualified,” and fewer than half of the students who took the 2026 exam, 48%, reached a 4 or higher. Whether it earns credit for a college calculus course is up to the college.

Can you use Desmos on the AP Calc AB exam?

Yes, in the two calculator parts only, which are the last 13 multiple-choice questions and the first two free-response questions. The Desmos tool inside Bluebook stays closed for the rest of the exam, and up to two handheld models from the approved list are allowed too. If a free-response result comes from the calculator, show what you set up to get it.

How long is the AP Calculus AB exam?

Three hours 10 minutes of testing: 1 hour 40 minutes for the multiple choice and 1 hour 30 minutes for the free response.

Does this calculator work for an older 45-question exam?

Yes, after one step. Multiply your multiple-choice score by 42/45 and round, so 36 right becomes 34, then enter your free-response points as they are, since those questions are still worth 9 each.

When do AP Calculus AB scores come out?

In July. Scores for the May 10, 2027 exam post to your College Board account in July 2027, under the same login you use for My AP.

Why does another calculator give me a different score?

Check two settings. First, how many multiple-choice questions it expects: the 2027 exam has 42, and a tool built for 45 undercounts your answers. Second, its cutoffs for a 4 and a 3, which vary more than the line for a 5. If both match and the results still differ, you are close to a cutoff.
