Unit 3 is Work, Energy, and Power. 18–23% of the AP Physics 1 exam — tied for the heaviest unit in the course.

Work done by a force
W = F·d·cosθ. Work is a scalar, and the angle between force and displacement decides the sign.
Kinetic energy & the work-energy theorem
Wnet = ΔKE. This single relationship answers a surprising share of the MCQ.
Potential energy
Gravitational (U = mgh) and elastic (U = ½kx2), always measured from a stated reference point.
Conservation of mechanical energy
When only conservative forces act, KE + U stays constant. Friction breaks it and turns energy into thermal energy.
Power
P = W/t = F·v. Average vs instantaneous power is a common distinction on the MCQ.

Energy bar-chart questions
You are given a before/after bar chart and asked which one fits the scenario. Track where energy starts, where it goes, and whether any leaves as heat.
Graph interpretation
Area under a force-vs-position graph is work. Slope of an energy-vs-time graph is power. Read the axes before anything else.
Conceptual comparison
Two objects, different masses or heights, “which has more kinetic energy at the bottom?” Set up conservation symbolically rather than plugging numbers.
Friction / non-conservative
Energy is not conserved as mechanical energy. Account for the thermal energy term explicitly.

The Progress Check FRQ

The Unit 3 FRQ typically gives you a multi-stage scenario — a block sliding down a ramp, a spring launcher, a system on a track — and asks you to reason with energy rather than forces. Points come from stating the principle (conservation of energy), defining your system and reference height, showing the algebra symbolically before substituting, and justifying in words why a quantity increases or decreases.

Where students lose the most points

Using the wrong reference height
U = mgh is meaningless until you say where h = 0. Define it and stick to it.
Forgetting cosθ in work
A force perpendicular to displacement does zero work. Vertical forces on horizontal motion do nothing.
Treating energy as conserved with friction
If a surface is rough, mechanical energy is not conserved. Add the thermal term.
Confusing power and energy
Power is a rate. “Which motor does more work” and “which is more powerful” are different questions.
Plugging in numbers too early
Solve symbolically, then substitute. The MCQ often asks for a ratio where the numbers cancel.
