How long are AP exams? Every 2027 exam, timed.
Most AP exams take 2 to 3 hours. Of the 38 timed exams, 31 fall in that range; 3 hours is the most common length. The longest, at 3 hours 15 minutes, are Chemistry, English Language, European History, US History, and World History. The shortest are Chinese and Japanese, at about 2 hours. Next question: are AP exams curved?
How long are AP exams in each subject?
Each row shows the exam’s total length (the testing time College Board lists), then how that time splits between multiple choice and free response. Hybrid exams have you answer multiple choice in the Bluebook app and handwrite your free responses in a paper booklet; fully digital exams happen entirely in Bluebook. Linked exam names open our full review of that exam, with its units and how it’s scored. You can also sort the table from longest to shortest.

These lengths are testing time only. They don’t include the 10-minute break, check-in, or getting Bluebook ready. College Board lists the six modern language exams as approximate because their free-response sections run a range of times (65–70 minutes on French, for example). AP Networking, a pilot course, is on the 2027 exam schedule, but College Board hasn’t published an exam page for it, so it isn’t in the table.
Which AP exam is the longest?
Chemistry, English Language, European History, US History, and World History are the longest AP exams, at 3 hours 15 minutes each. Calculus AB and Calculus BC come next at 3 hours 10 minutes. In each case it’s the written part that stretches the day. US, European, and World History spend 2 hours 20 minutes on written answers: three short answers, then a document-based question and a long essay. English Language’s free-response section runs 2 hours 15 minutes, and its first 15 minutes are a reading period. Chemistry asks seven free-response questions in 1 hour 45 minutes.
If one of these is on your list, practice the written half at full length at least once. That’s where most of the time goes, and where stamina runs out.
Which AP exam is the shortest?
Chinese and Japanese Language and Culture are the shortest AP exams, at about 2 hours each; College Board lists both lengths as approximate. AP Seminar’s exam is also 2 hours, but it’s only part of the grade: two performance tasks you complete during the year count for 55% of your score.
Of the other exams, Cybersecurity, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics take 2 hours 10 minutes, and Human Geography takes 2 hours 15 minutes. College Board’s own rule of thumb is that exams for subjects matching a half-year college course run closer to two hours.
Are all AP exams 3 hours?
No. Only five exams run 3 hours 15 minutes, the length you’ll often hear quoted. By length, the 38 timed exams split like this:
- 3 hours 15 minutes: 5 exams
- 3 hours 10 minutes: 2 exams
- Exactly 3 hours: 13 exams, the most common length
- 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 55 minutes: 11 exams
- About 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes: 7 exams
By subject area:
- Arts: about 2 hours 40 minutes (Music Theory) to 3 hours (Art History); 2-D Art and Design, 3-D Art and Design, and Drawing are portfolios with no timed exam
- English: 3 hours (English Literature) to 3 hours 15 minutes (English Language)
- History and social sciences: 2 hours 10 minutes (Macroeconomics and Microeconomics) to 3 hours 15 minutes (European History, US History, and World History)
- Math and computer science: 2 hours 55 minutes (Precalculus) to 3 hours 10 minutes (Calculus AB and Calculus BC)
- Sciences: 2 hours 40 minutes (Environmental Science) to 3 hours 15 minutes (Chemistry)
- World languages: about 2 hours (Chinese and Japanese) to 3 hours (Latin and Spanish Literature)
- AP Capstone: 2 hours (Seminar); Research has no end-of-course exam
- AP Career Kickstart: 2 hours 10 minutes (Cybersecurity) to 2 hours 40 minutes (Business with Personal Finance)
Averaged across all of them, an AP exam lasts about 2 hours 45 minutes. Line them up by length and the middle one runs 3 hours.
How long is each section?
Most timed AP exams have the same structure: a multiple-choice section, the 10-minute break, then a free-response section. The six modern language exams reverse the order. Multiple-choice time runs from 55 minutes to 2 hours, and free-response time from 50 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes. AP Biology is a typical split: 60 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, then 6 free-response questions in another 1 hour 30 minutes.
The pace on multiple choice varies more than the section lengths suggest. Divide the time by the number of questions and Art History gives you about 45 seconds a question, Calculus AB and BC about 2 minutes 23 seconds, and Precalculus about 2 minutes 30 seconds. It’s worth knowing your exam’s number before you set your own pacing in practice.
Some free-response sections include a reading period inside their time: 15 minutes on English Language and 10 minutes on Macroeconomics and Microeconomics.
College Board also suggests pacing for some written sections. On the history exams it recommends about 1 hour for the document-based question, including 15 minutes of reading, and 40 minutes for the long essay on US and European History. On AP Seminar’s exam it suggests 30 minutes for the three short answers and 1 hour 30 minutes for the essay; on Spanish Literature, 15 minutes per short answer and 35 minutes per essay; and on African American Studies, 45 minutes for the document-based question.
Is there a break during AP exams?
Yes. Most AP exams have a 10-minute break between Section I and Section II. In Bluebook, the break screen appears when you finish the first section, and you can get up without waiting for the proctor to dismiss you. AP Seminar is the exception: it has no scheduled break.
The break has rules. You can’t use your phone or any other device, look at notes or textbooks, or talk with teachers or classmates, and you can’t leave the building. You also can’t discuss the exam’s content with anyone, then or afterward. With the proctor’s permission you can step out for water or a snack, but food and drink stay out of the exam room. Break time doesn’t count as testing time, so none of the lengths in the table include it. College Board’s break policy has the full list.
How long will you be at school on exam day?
Plan for longer than the table suggests. Add the 10-minute break to the testing time, then check-in, seating, the proctor’s instructions, and getting Bluebook ready, which College Board doesn’t put a number on. A 3-hour exam like Biology is already 3 hours 10 minutes of testing and break before any of that.
In most of the US, Session 1 (the morning session) starts at 8 a.m. local time and Session 2 (the afternoon session) at 12 p.m. (7 a.m. and 11 a.m. in Alaska). So a 3-hour Session 1 exam keeps you there until 11:10 a.m. at the earliest.
If you have an exam in each session on the same day, the gap is short. Even the longest Session 1 exam (3 hours 15 minutes) plus the break ends around 11:25 a.m., leaving at most about 35 minutes before Session 2 starts at 12 p.m., and less if the morning exam starts late. Your AP coordinator confirms the exact time and room. Check the AP test dates to see which day and session each of your exams falls in.
How extended time changes the length
If College Board approves you for extended time, it usually adds 50% or 100% more, and only to the sections your approval covers. On a 3-hour exam where it applies to both sections, that’s 4 hours 30 minutes of testing at time and one-half, or 6 hours at double time. Once the standard time has passed, you can move on or finish, but you can’t go back to a section after you leave it.
Extended time doesn’t add breaks on AP exams. Breaks are a separate accommodation: extra breaks add a 5-minute break midway through each section, and extended breaks double the scheduled break to 20 minutes. Requests go through College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD); its AP accommodations page explains how they work.
Digital and hybrid exams
Of the 38 timed exams, 26 are fully digital: you answer everything in Bluebook, and your responses are submitted automatically at the end. The other 12 are hybrid: Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Music Theory, Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, Physics C: Mechanics, and Precalculus. On those, you answer multiple choice and read the free-response questions in Bluebook, but you handwrite your answers in a paper booklet.
The modern language exams change order in 2027. They now open with the free-response section, including two speaking questions built on a project you complete before exam day, and finish with multiple choice. The lengths in the table are for this 2027 format. If you haven’t used it yet, our guide to the AP Bluebook app shows what testing in it looks like.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers, worked out from College Board’s 2027 exam pages.
How long is an AP exam?
Most AP exams take 2 to 3 hours of testing time. Of the 38 timed exams, 31 fall in that range and 13 run exactly 3 hours. The longest take 3 hours 15 minutes, and the shortest about 2 hours.
How long are AP tests on average?
About 2 hours 45 minutes, averaged across all 38 timed exams. The middle exam by length runs 3 hours, which is also the most common length. The 10-minute break comes on top of that.
Why do some lists show different AP exam lengths?
Because many haven’t caught up with the current exams. Some still show AP Physics C at 1 hour 30 minutes, Psychology at 2 hours, or the language exams at 3 hours. College Board’s 2027 pages list both Physics C exams at 3 hours each, Psychology at 2 hours 40 minutes, and the modern language exams at about 2 hours 30 minutes or about 2 hours. Every length on this page comes from those pages.
What is the longest AP exam?
Chemistry, English Language, European History, US History, and World History tie for longest, at 3 hours 15 minutes each. Calculus AB and Calculus BC are next at 3 hours 10 minutes.
What is the shortest AP exam?
Chinese and Japanese Language and Culture, at about 2 hours. AP Seminar’s exam is also 2 hours, but performance tasks done during the year make up most of its score. Of the rest, Cybersecurity, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics are shortest at 2 hours 10 minutes.
Do you get a break during an AP exam?
Yes, on most exams: 10 minutes between Section I and Section II. AP Seminar has no scheduled break. During the break you can’t use your phone, check notes, or leave the building.
How much time do you get per multiple-choice question?
It depends on the exam. Divide the section time by the number of questions and you get about 45 seconds a question on Art History, about 2 minutes 23 seconds on Calculus AB and BC, and about 2 minutes 30 seconds on Precalculus.
Does extended time make an AP exam longer?
Yes, if you’re approved for it. College Board usually adds 50% or 100% to the sections your approval covers, so a 3-hour exam can run 4 hours 30 minutes or 6 hours. It doesn’t add extra breaks; those are a separate accommodation.
Do AP Art and Design and AP Research have an exam?
No. AP 2-D Art and Design, 3-D Art and Design, and Drawing are assessed by portfolio, submitted in the AP Digital Portfolio by May 7, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. ET. AP Research has no end-of-course exam: you submit an academic paper and give a presentation and oral defense, due April 30, 2027.
Sources: every length, section, and format in the table comes from College Board’s AP Students course pages and AP Central exam pages for each subject, checked September 28, 2026. The break and extended-time rules are from College Board’s AP accommodations page, its break accommodations page, and the Bluebook AP Exams page; the general format is on AP Exam Timing and Structure. If College Board changes an exam’s timing, we update the table.
