Can a molecule have polar bonds but be non-polar overall?
Yes. If the molecular geometry is symmetric, the individual bond dipoles cancel, making the whole molecule non-polar. Carbon dioxide is the standard example.
How do I predict molecular geometry?
Count the electron domains around the central atom, including lone pairs, then apply VSEPR theory. Lone pairs affect the shape even though they are not part of the molecular geometry name.
