How your 2027 AP Calculus BC exam is scored, section by section
Half your score comes from multiple choice and half from free response, and inside each half College Board decides when a calculator comes out.
You get 1 hour 40 minutes for the 42 multiple-choice questions. The first 29 (Part A, 62 minutes) are calculator-free and make up 35% of the exam score; the last 13 (Part B, 38 minutes) count for 15%, and some of them need a graphing calculator. The six free-response questions take 1 hour 30 minutes. A graphing calculator is required on the first two (Part A, 30 minutes, 16.7%) and not permitted on the last four (Part B, 60 minutes, 33.3%). Every free-response question is graded out of 9 points.
| Section and part | Questions | Time | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| I, Part A: no calculator | 29 | 62 minutes | 35% |
| I, Part B: graphing calculator | 13 | 38 minutes | 15% |
| II, Part A: graphing calculator | 2 | 30 minutes | 16.7% |
| II, Part B: no calculator | 4 | 60 minutes | 33.3% |
In this calculator a correct multiple-choice answer is worth 54/42, about 1.29 points of the 108-point composite, and each free-response point is worth 1, so the two sections end up weighted the same, 54 points each.
| What you get right | Adds to the composite |
|---|---|
| One multiple-choice answer | 1.286 |
| One free-response point | 1 |
| All 42 multiple-choice answers | 54 |
| All 54 free-response points | 54 |
Readers grade the free response against College Board’s published scoring guidelines, part by part, so partial credit is real: a correct setup can earn points even when the final number is off. How the rubric treats each kind of question, series and polar included, is broken down in our AP Calc BC FRQ guide.

What changed on the 2027 exam
College Board shortened the multiple choice for May 2027 and left the free response alone. Part A went from 30 questions to 29 and gained two minutes, from 60 to 62. Part B went from 15 questions to 13, with 38 minutes instead of 45. The free-response section keeps its six questions and its 1 hour 30 minutes.
It’s a hybrid digital exam. You answer the multiple choice in Bluebook, College Board’s testing app, and read the free-response questions there too, but you write those answers by hand in a paper booklet. Start to finish, the exam runs 3 hours 10 minutes.
The 10 units and how much of the multiple choice each covers
BC covers the eight AB units plus two of its own, and College Board gives each unit a weighting in the multiple-choice section. The BC-only units carry a lot. Series alone is 15% to 20%, as much as integration and accumulation of change.
| Unit | Share of the multiple choice |
|---|---|
| Unit 1: Limits and Continuity | 5–10% |
| Unit 2: Differentiation: Definition and Basic Derivative Rules | 5–10% |
| Unit 3: Differentiation: Composite, Implicit, and Inverse Functions | 5–10% |
| Unit 4: Contextual Applications of Differentiation | 5–10% |
| Unit 5: Applying Derivatives to Analyze Functions | 10–15% |
| Unit 6: Integration and Accumulation of Change | 15–20% |
| Unit 7: Differential Equations | 5–10% |
| Unit 8: Applications of Integration | 5–10% |
| Unit 9: Parametric Equations, Polar Coordinates, and Vector-Valued Functions (BC only) | 10–15% |
| Unit 10: Infinite Sequences and Series (BC only) | 15–20% |
What each unit covers is in our AP Calc BC units guide, and the formulas behind them are collected on our AP Calc BC formula sheet.

Why most AP Calc BC score calculators are a year behind
For 2027 College Board cut three questions from multiple choice, so the section now has 42 instead of 45. On October 3, 2026, we checked the 18 AP Calculus BC score calculators on the first page of US Google and Bing results, and 13 of them still score you out of 45.
The gap is big enough to change a score. Take 28 free-response points, which is what College Board’s 2025 averages add up to when each one is rounded, and 27 multiple-choice answers right. This calculator puts you at 62.7, just past our line for a 5. A tool still built for 45 questions counts the same 27 answers as 32.4 points instead of 34.7 and lands you at 60.4, which on our lines is a 4.
Scoring an older 45-question exam
Any BC exam from before 2027 has 45 multiple-choice questions. Convert that raw score to the 42-question scale first: multiply by 42/45, so 40 right becomes 37.3, and enter 37. Free-response questions were already out of 9, so those go in unchanged.
What score do you need for a 5 on AP Calc BC?
On our estimate a 5 starts at a composite of 61.6 out of 108, which is 57% of the available points. The line for a 4 sits at 48.3, a 3 at 37.8 and a 2 at 18.4.
| AP score | Composite (of 108) | Share of the points |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 61.6 to 108 | 57% |
| 4 | 48.3 to 61.5 | 45% |
| 3 | 37.8 to 48.2 | 35% |
| 2 | 18.4 to 37.7 | 17% |
| 1 | below 18.4 | – |
That 5 line sits well below this site’s Calculus AB line of 69.3 because the two exams’ results differ so much: in 2026, 46% of BC students earned a 5, against 20% in AB, and our lines are fitted to those results.
Why College Board publishes no cutoff
The Course and Exam Description says AP scores are criterion referenced. A score reflects the standard your work meets, not where you rank among this year’s test takers. Since every May brings a new exam form, the raw points behind a 4 aren’t fixed from one year to the next, while the standard is. College Board publishes no official conversion table and keeps those conversions private, which is why the raw-score cutoffs you find online, ours included, are all estimates.
What you need on each section for a 3, 4 or 5
The two sections trade off. Every 4 free-response points you add saves you about three multiple-choice answers.
| Free-response points (of 54) | For a 5 | For a 4 | For a 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 33 of 42 | 22 of 42 | 14 of 42 |
| 28 | 27 of 42 | 16 of 42 | 8 of 42 |
| 36 | 20 of 42 | 10 of 42 | 2 of 42 |
| 44 | 14 of 42 | 4 of 42 | none needed |
With 28 free-response points, close to a typical result, you need 27 multiple-choice answers for a 5, 16 for a 4 and 8 for a 3. Either section alone gets you to a 4 on our lines: all 42 multiple-choice answers with nothing in free response make a composite of 54, and 54 free-response points with zero multiple choice land on the same 54. A 5 needs both.
College Board’s free-response averages, 2023 to 2025
College Board publishes the mean score on every free-response question each year. From 2023 to 2025 the question averages ran from 3.09 to 6.45 out of 9, and the six together came to 27.15, 32.72 and 29.57 of 54.
| Question | 2025 mean | Share of 9 | 2024 | 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (calculator) | 5.22 | 58% | 6.45 | 5.26 |
| 2 (calculator) | 3.09 | 34% | 5.56 | 5.20 |
| 3 (no calculator) | 6.27 | 70% | 5.57 | 3.74 |
| 4 (no calculator) | 5.46 | 61% | 5.84 | 4.03 |
| 5 (no calculator) | 5.21 | 58% | 5.92 | 4.71 |
| 6 (no calculator) | 4.32 | 48% | 3.38 | 4.21 |
| All six, of 54 | 29.57 | 55% | 32.72 | 27.15 |
Three of the six questions each year are shared with the AB exam and test AB content. In both 2025 and 2026, question 2 was about a polar curve and question 6 about a power series, and the 2025 polar question was the year’s hardest, averaging 3.09. In both years the two calculator questions reminded students to put the calculator in radian mode.
The 2025 set opened with an invasive plant spreading through a fruit grove and went on to a polar curve, a student’s reading pace, a function built from a graph of two semicircles and a line, a differential equation and a Taylor series centered at x = 4, with its interval of convergence. The 2026 set covered male birds arriving at a nesting area, a polar region, the temperature of a pie cooling on a table, a function known through the graph of its derivative, the region between two curves and a Maclaurin series. College Board hasn’t posted the 2026 averages yet.

AP Calc BC score distribution for 2026
Of the students who took AP Calculus BC in 2026, 46% earned a 5, and 82% got a passing score of 3 or higher. Only two of the 40 exams College Board reported had a larger share of 5s, and six had a higher pass rate.
| Year | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 or higher |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 46 | 22 | 14 | 14 | 4 | 82 |
| 2025 | 44.0 | 21.9 | 12.8 | 15.2 | 6.2 | 78.6 |
| 2024 | 47.7 | 21.1 | 12.1 | 13.9 | 5.2 | 80.9 |
| 2023 | 43.5 | 15.9 | 19.0 | 15.2 | 6.3 | 78.5 |
| 2022 | 41.2 | 15.6 | 20.1 | 16.4 | 6.8 | 76.9 |
For 2026, College Board has released percentages only, with no test-taker count or mean yet; those percentages imply a mean near 3.92. In 2025, 160,436 students took the exam and averaged 3.82. The share of 5s has stayed between 41% and 48% every year since 2022.
Sources: College Board’s AP Calculus BC score distributions and its 2026 table for all AP exams, both on AP Students. AP Central’s global report for May 2025 gives a slightly different count, 160,954; we use the AP Students numbers throughout.
The AB subscore on your BC score report
Your BC score comes with a second number: a Calculus AB subscore from 1 to 5.
College Board bases it on the AB topics, which make up about 60% of the BC exam, and recommends that colleges treat it the way they would an AP Calculus AB score. In May 2025, 160,953 students got one; 47.7% earned a 5 and 88.0% earned a 3 or higher. This calculator predicts the BC score only, because College Board doesn’t say where the subscore’s lines fall.
| Year | Students | Earned a 5 | 3 or higher | Mean |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 160,953 | 47.7 | 88.0 | 4.11 |
| 2024 | 148,191 | 50.1 | 88.2 | 4.16 |
One more rule: College Board won’t let a student take AB and BC in the same year, so a BC student’s only AB result that year is this subscore.

Which calculator can you use on the 2027 exam?
Two parts are calculator required: Part B of Section I and Part A of Section II. The other two parts are calculator-free.
Bluebook’s built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available in those calculator parts only. You can also bring up to two handheld graphing calculators, as long as each one is on College Board’s approved list.
College Board expects a calculator to handle four jobs on this exam: plotting a function in any viewing window, finding its zeros and computing both derivatives and definite integrals numerically. When it does the work in free response, show your setup on paper: write the integral, derivative or equation, then the result. A bare number doesn’t earn full credit.
Sources: the calculator policy on AP Students and the Course and Exam Description’s section on calculators and other technology.
Is a 3 or a 4 on AP Calc BC good?
Either one is a good score, and College Board’s own labels agree: a 3 means qualified and a 4 very well qualified. In 2026, 68% of BC students earned a 4 or a 5, while 14% earned a 3.
| AP score | College Board’s description |
|---|---|
| 5 | Extremely well qualified |
| 4 | Very well qualified |
| 3 | Qualified |
| 2 | Possibly qualified |
| 1 | No recommendation |
Colleges decide what a BC score earns in credit and placement, and the rules vary; College Board’s AP Credit Policy Search shows each college’s. College Board also asks colleges to read the AB subscore as they would an AB exam score, so where a college follows that advice, a strong subscore can earn AB credit even when the BC score falls short.
When is the 2027 AP Calc BC exam, and when do scores come out?
Monday, May 10, 2027, in Session 1. That session starts at 8 a.m. local time, or 7 a.m. in Alaska. Scores are released in July, in your College Board account.

How this AP Calculus BC score calculator estimates your score
The composite is arithmetic, and it’s exact: 54 points for each section, the 50/50 split College Board sets, with your answers and points scaled to fit. The weak spot is your own scoring. A free-response point counts only when the scoring guidelines’ condition for it is met, and generous self-scoring, a point here and there across six questions, is what usually pushes a predicted AP score too high.
We set the lines with College Board’s own BC numbers. Its 2025 free-response averages put a typical student at 54.8% of the points, its per-question spreads set how far scores range, and we fitted the lines so they return College Board’s 2026 results: 46% 5s, 22% 4s, 14% 3s, 14% 2s and 4% 1s. College Board doesn’t publish a multiple-choice average, so our model gives multiple choice the same 54.8%. The line for a 2 rests on the thinnest data, so treat it as the roughest of the four.
If your composite lands within about 3 points of a line, either score is realistic.
Why AP Calc BC score calculators disagree
Mostly two settings. Thirteen of the 18 tools we checked still count each multiple-choice answer at 1.2 points instead of 1.286, because they expect 45 questions. Their lines differ too: on a 108-point scale they put a 5 anywhere from 62 to 70, a 4 from 47 to 56 and a 3 from 34 to 44. Our line for a 5, 61.6, sits at the low end of that range, and our lines for a 4 and a 3 sit below most of theirs, because College Board’s 2026 results put 68% of students at 4 or higher and 82% at 3 or higher.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers, checked against College Board.
What percent is a 5 on AP Calc BC?
There are two ways to read it. As a share of students, 46% of 2026 BC test takers got a 5. As a share of points, our estimated line is 61.6 of 108, or 57%, though College Board itself publishes no cutoff.
Is 70% a 5 on AP Calc BC?
Yes, with room to spare. Seventy percent of 108 is 75.6, about 14 points above our line. Spread evenly, that’s 29 multiple-choice answers and 38 free-response points, a composite of 75.3.
How many multiple-choice answers do you need right for a 5 on AP Calc BC?
That turns on your free-response total. At 40 of 54 free-response points, 17 of 42 does it; at 32, you need 23; at 24, you need 30.
Is there an AP Calc BC curve?
Not in the sense most students mean. College Board describes AP Exams as criterion referenced: your score depends on how your work compares with a fixed standard, not with the other people in the room that day. Because each year’s exam is a different form, College Board converts the results to the 1 to 5 scale in a way that keeps a 4 this May worth what a 4 was worth last May. It doesn’t publish those conversions, so the lines in this calculator, like everyone’s, are estimates.
Is Calc BC the hardest AP?
The numbers don’t make it look like the hardest. In 2026, 46% of BC test takers earned a 5 and 82% scored 3 or higher (College Board’s 2026 score distribution). How hard a course feels and how its scores come out are different questions, and these figures only answer the second.
Can you use Desmos on the AP Calc BC exam?
Only in the calculator parts. Bluebook’s built-in Desmos graphing calculator opens in Part B of the multiple-choice section and Part A of the free-response section, and stays off everywhere else. College Board also allows as many as two handheld graphing calculators from its approved list. Whatever you use, write the setup on the page in free response: the integral, derivative or equation you solved, before the number.
Does this calculator predict my AB subscore?
No, it scores the BC exam only. College Board doesn’t publish where the subscore’s 1 to 5 lines fall, and an estimate built without them would be a guess. For a sense of how subscores land, nearly half of 2025 BC students, 47.7%, got a 5 on theirs.
Can I score an older 45-question BC exam with this?
Yes. Scale the multiple-choice score first: 33 right out of 45, times 42/45, is 30.8, so enter 31. Free-response questions were scored out of 9 then too, so they go in unchanged.
When do AP Calculus BC scores come out?
In July 2027, for the exam on May 10. They appear in your College Board account, the one you also use for My AP.
Why does another BC calculator give me a different score?
Check what it expects for the multiple choice first: if it asks for a score out of 45, it undercounts every answer on the 2027 exam. Then compare lines. Tools roughly agree on a 5 but scatter on the 4 and the 3, so two of them can split a borderline result.
