How the 2027 AP CSA exam is scored: 55% and 45%
The exam runs 3 hours, all of it in Bluebook, and its two sections are weighted unevenly.
Section I gives you 90 minutes for 42 multiple-choice questions and counts for 55% of your score. Section II gives you another 90 minutes for four free-response questions, where you write Java methods and classes, and counts for 45%. Those four questions aren’t worth the same. The first two, Methods and Control Structures and Class Design, carry 7 points each; 2D Array carries 6 and Data Analysis with ArrayList 5, for 25 in all.
| Section | Questions | Time | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| I: multiple choice | 42 | 90 minutes | 55% |
| II: free response | 4 | 90 minutes | 45% |
So each multiple-choice answer you get right adds about 1.31 points to this calculator’s 100-point composite, and each free-response point adds 1.8. One point of free response is worth about 1.4 right answers in multiple choice.
| What you get right | Adds to the composite |
|---|---|
| One multiple-choice answer | 1.31 |
| One free-response point | 1.8 |
| All 42 multiple-choice answers | 55 |
| All 25 free-response points | 45 |
A worked example
Say you get 28 of the 42 multiple-choice questions right and earn 6, 5, 4 and 4 on the free response, 19 of the 25 points. Multiple choice gives you 36.7 composite points (28 times 1.31) and free response gives 34.2 (19 times 1.8), so your composite is 70.9. That clears our line for a 5, which sits at 68.8.

What changed on the revised AP CSA exam
The AP CSA exam you take in May 2027 is the second one built on College Board’s revised course, and its structure differs from the exam students took until 2025.
In May 2025 the multiple-choice section had 40 questions and the free-response section four, each section worth 50%, and every free-response question was scored out of 9. Starting with the May 2026 exam, multiple choice grew to 42 questions and 55% of the score while free response dropped to 45%, and the four questions became worth 7, 7, 5 and 6 points. The third question changed focus too, from arrays and ArrayLists together to data analysis with an ArrayList. The exam was already fully digital in Bluebook before the change, so that part stayed the same.
| May 2025 exam | May 2026 and 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 40 questions, 50% | 42 questions, 55% |
| Free response | 4 questions, 9 points each, 50% | 4 questions worth 7, 7, 5 and 6 points, 45% |
| Question 3 | Array / ArrayList | Data Analysis with ArrayList |
College Board flags the gap itself. Its page of past free-response questions warns that the sets from before the revision don’t fully match today’s exam, and keeps them up because teachers still find them useful.
The 4 units and their share of the multiple choice
The revised course has four units, and College Board gives each one a weighting in the multiple-choice section. Selection and Iteration covers Boolean expressions, if statements and loops. Data Collections, home to arrays, ArrayLists, 2D arrays, recursion and the searching and sorting algorithms, is the largest at 30% to 40%.
| Unit | Share of the multiple choice |
|---|---|
| Unit 1: Using Objects and Methods | 15–25% |
| Unit 2: Selection and Iteration | 25–35% |
| Unit 3: Class Creation | 10–18% |
| Unit 4: Data Collections | 30–40% |
What each unit covers, topic by topic, is in our AP CSA units guide.

Why most AP CSA score calculators are a year behind
On October 4, 2026, we checked the AP Computer Science A score calculators that rank on page one in US Google and Bing, 17 in all.
Nine still score the free response out of 36 points, the pre-2026 total, and eight still expect 40 multiple-choice questions. That matters more than it looks. If you earn 18 of today’s 25 free-response points, you have 72% of the section. A calculator built for 36 points reads the same 18 as half the section.
Put 30 right multiple-choice answers with those 18 points. This calculator gives you 71.7, a 5 on our lines. Scale the same 18 points against 36 instead and the free response is worth 22.5 of its 45 points, not 32.4, so the composite falls to 61.8, a 4.
Scoring an older exam with 9-point questions
Exams from 2025 and earlier had 40 multiple-choice questions and four free-response questions worth 9 points each. To use one here, scale each piece to today’s maximum. Multiply a multiple-choice score by 42/40, so 32 right becomes 33.6 and you enter 34, and scale each free-response score to its question’s new maximum, so 6 of 9 on the first question becomes 4.7 of 7 and you enter 5. The tasks changed with the revision, so treat the result as a rough guide.
What percent is a 5 on AP CSA?
This calculator puts the line for a 5 at a composite of 68.8 out of 100, with a 4 from 48.8, a 3 from 37.7 and a 2 from 28.4.
| AP score | Composite (of 100) | College Board label |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 68.8 to 100 | Extremely well qualified |
| 4 | 48.8 to 68.7 | Very well qualified |
| 3 | 37.7 to 48.7 | Qualified |
| 2 | 28.4 to 37.6 | Possibly qualified |
| 1 | below 28.4 | No recommendation |
Each AP score covers a score range on the composite, and the table gives the threshold for each one. Counted in students instead of points, a quarter of 2026 test takers earned a 5. The line for a 4 sits lower than many calculators put it, because College Board’s 2026 results placed 51% of students at a 4 or higher.
Why there’s no official AP CSA cutoff
College Board sets the lines for a 2, 3, 4 and 5 through what it calls Evidence Based Standard Setting, which draws on input from college faculty and detailed data on how students performed, so that a score reflects the same level of work from year to year. Each May brings a new exam form, so the raw points behind a 4 can move while the standard stays put. College Board doesn’t publish those raw-score lines, which is why all the cutoffs you find online, ours included, are estimates. People often call this set of lines the AP CSA curve, but nobody is ranked against the other students in the room.
Multiple-choice and free-response totals for a 3, 4 or 5
The two sections trade off: 3 more free-response points do the work of about four more right multiple-choice answers.
| Free-response points (of 25) | For a 5 | For a 4 | For a 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 42 of 42 | 27 of 42 | 18 of 42 |
| 12 | 37 of 42 | 21 of 42 | 13 of 42 |
| 16 | 31 of 42 | 16 of 42 | 7 of 42 |
| 20 | 26 of 42 | 10 of 42 | 2 of 42 |
| 24 | 20 of 42 | 5 of 42 | none needed |
At 12 free-response points, about what College Board’s averages suggest, a 5 takes 37 right multiple-choice answers, a 4 takes 21 and a 3 takes 13. Neither section reaches a 5 on its own. A perfect multiple-choice section with no free-response points is a composite of 55, which is a 4, while every free-response point with no multiple choice adds up to 45, a 3.
What the 7, 7, 5 and 6 free-response points are for
Every free-response point is a single rubric line that you either earn or miss, and a point that isn’t labeled as an algorithm point can be earned even when something else in your answer is wrong. That is how partial credit works on this exam.
Question 1, Methods and Control Structures, has two parts: 4 points for a method or constructor built on loops or conditionals that calls the class’s other methods, and 3 for one that relies on String methods. Question 2, Class Design, asks for a whole class, with its class header, instance variables, constructor and a method, for 7 points. Question 3 (5 points) asks you to traverse and change the data stored in an ArrayList, and Question 4 (6 points) does the same with a 2D array.
How each of those points is earned, question by question, is in our AP comp sci A FRQ guide.
What the 2026 free-response questions asked
The 2026 set, the first written to the new point values, opened with an Account class for a website. You wrote a constructor that keeps adding a number to a requested username until the name is free, then a method that shortens the username with String methods. Question 2 had you write a Bottle class that starts full and tracks how much liquid is left against its capacity in milliliters. Question 3 worked with a CourseRecord class holding a student’s course information, and Question 4 with a Space class for the squares of a game board. College Board hasn’t posted statistics for these questions yet.
How students scored on the 9-point questions, 2023 to 2025
Every year College Board posts the average score for each free-response question. Under the old format, with four questions worth 9 points each, the averages ran from 3.20 to 5.70, and the four together came to 17.31, 18.06 and 17.83 of 36 in 2023, 2024 and 2025: about half the points every year.
| Question | 2025 | 2024 | 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Methods and Control Structures | 4.53 | 4.83 | 4.07 |
| 2. Class Design | 5.24 | 5.70 | 4.74 |
| 3. Array / ArrayList | 4.11 | 4.33 | 5.07 |
| 4. 2D Array | 3.95 | 3.20 | 3.43 |
| All four, of 36 | 17.83 | 18.06 | 17.31 |
Question 4, the 2D array task, had the lowest average in all three years.
Where students lost points in 2025
College Board’s 2025 chief reader report gives the average score on all 36 rubric points from that year’s four 9-point questions, each point worth 1. Most of them, 26 of 36, were earned by 40% to 70% of students. A few sat far lower, and three of the seven lowest were the last point of their question, each one labeled as an algorithm point.
| Question | Rubric point | Average (of 1) |
|---|---|---|
| 4. 2D Array | Handle special case | 0.12 |
| 3. Array / ArrayList | Populate result list (algorithm) | 0.19 |
| 1. Methods and Control Structures | Call methods on object | 0.27 |
| 1. Methods and Control Structures | Accumulate total (algorithm) | 0.32 |
| 2. Class Design | Return revised string (algorithm) | 0.32 |
| 4. 2D Array | Construct 2D array | 0.33 |
| 2. Class Design | Distinguish three cases | 0.34 |
The single hardest point, handling a special case in the 2D array question, went to 12% of students.

AP CSA score distribution 2026: the first year of the revised exam
In May 2026, the first exam on the revised course, 25% of AP CSA test takers earned a 5, 26% a 4, 15% a 3, 11% a 2 and 23% a 1. Compared with 2025, the share of 4s rose by about four points and the share of 3s fell by about five, while the 5s and 1s barely moved.
| Year | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 or higher |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 25 | 26 | 15 | 11 | 23 | 66 |
| 2025 | 25.6 | 21.8 | 19.8 | 10.9 | 22.0 | 67.2 |
| 2024 | 25.6 | 21.4 | 20.1 | 10.8 | 22.0 | 67.2 |
| 2023 | 26.8 | 22.4 | 18.8 | 9.5 | 22.5 | 68.0 |
| 2022 | 27.3 | 20.4 | 19.9 | 10.4 | 22.1 | 67.6 |
The pass rate, the share with a passing score of 3 or higher, was 66%. The 23% who earned a 1 was the largest share of 1s among the 40 exams in College Board’s 2026 table, while only four exams had a larger share of 5s. College Board’s 2026 figures are percentages only, with no test-taker count yet; they imply a mean near 3.19. In 2025, 93,217 students took the exam and their mean score was 3.18.
Sources: the AP Computer Science A score distributions and the all-exam 2026 distribution table on College Board’s AP Students site. The global distribution report for May 2025, posted on AP Central, counts 93,906 students instead of 93,217; this page uses the AP Students figures.
What AP CSA score is good, and does it earn credit?
A 3 or higher is a good score by College Board’s own wording, which calls a 3 qualified, a 4 very well qualified and a 5 extremely well qualified. In 2026, 51% of AP CSA students earned a 4 or a 5.
| AP score | College Board’s description |
|---|---|
| 5 | Extremely well qualified |
| 4 | Very well qualified |
| 3 | Qualified |
| 2 | Possibly qualified |
| 1 | No recommendation |
Credit and placement are each college’s call, and policies vary widely. To see what a particular college gives for a CSA score, look it up in College Board’s AP Credit Policy Search.
AP CSA vs AP CSP
The two AP computer science courses test different things. AP CSA is Java programming from start to finish, and its four free-response questions ask you to write working Java code. In AP Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) your teacher picks the programming language and the course covers wider ground, from how the internet works to data and the effects of computing. Its exam pairs 70 multiple-choice questions (70%) with the Create performance task, a program you write in class time during the year (30%).

When is the 2027 AP CSA exam, and what you get in Bluebook
The exam date is Wednesday, May 12, 2027, in Session 2. That session starts at 12 p.m. local time, or 11 a.m. in Alaska. The exam is fully digital: you answer both sections in Bluebook, College Board’s testing app, and your answers are submitted automatically at the end.
Inside the app you get the Java Quick Reference, College Board’s list of the Java library methods the exam can use, and your school may hand out a printed copy as well. Calculators are not allowed on Computer Science A, apart from a four-function model approved as an accommodation. Scores come out in July, in your College Board account.

How this AP Computer Science A score calculator estimates your score
The arithmetic behind the composite is exact. Multiple choice can add up to 55 points and free response up to 45, matching College Board’s split. What this AP CSA calculator can’t check is how you scored yourself. In free response a rubric point is earned only when its condition is fully met, so give yourself the point only if your code clearly does what that line asks; rounding up on two or three points is the usual reason a predicted AP score comes out high.
We set the lines from College Board’s own CSA figures. From 2023 to 2025 students averaged about half the free-response points (49.5% in 2025), with wide spreads on every question, and we placed the four lines where they reproduce College Board’s 2026 results: 25% 5s, 26% 4s, 15% 3s, 11% 2s and 23% 1s. Two gaps are worth knowing. Those averages come from the old four 9-point questions, because College Board hasn’t yet published free-response statistics for the revised exam. It also publishes no multiple-choice average, so we assume multiple choice matches the free-response share. We’ll refit the lines once the 2026 statistics appear.
Treat anything within about 3 points of a line as a toss-up between the two scores.
Why two AP CSA calculators can give different scores
Mostly two settings. Nine of the 17 tools we checked still score the free response out of 36, which undervalues every point on today’s exam. Their lines differ too: most of the ones that show their lines put a 5 between 77.5% and 78% of the composite, a 4 between 57.5% and 59% and a 3 between 46% and 47%. Our line for a 5, 68.8, sits well below theirs because College Board’s 2026 results put 25% of students at a 5; on our model, lines that high would hand a 5 to about one student in six.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers, checked against College Board.
What percent is a 5 on AP CSA?
Read it two ways. By students, 25% of 2026 AP CSA test takers got a 5. By points, our estimated line is 68.8 of the 100-point composite, though College Board publishes no cutoff of its own.
Is 70% a 5 on AP CSA?
Yes, just. Seventy percent of the composite is 70, which clears our line of 68.8 by 1.2 points. Thirty right answers and 17 free-response points, for example, make 69.9.
How many multiple-choice questions do you need right for a 5 on AP CSA?
That depends on your free response. With 20 of 25 free-response points, 26 of 42 does it; with 16, you need 31; with 12, 37.
Is the AP CSA exam curved?
Not in the sense of grading you against your classmates. College Board keeps a score’s meaning steady from one year to the next and sets the 1 to 5 lines with help from college faculty, then keeps the raw-score conversion private. So any cutoff you see, including this calculator’s, is an estimate.
Is AP CSA hard?
Its results are unusually spread out. In 2026, 23% of AP CSA test takers earned a 1, the highest share of any of the 40 exams on College Board’s 2026 score-distribution page, while 25% earned a 5 and 66% reached a 3 or higher. Those figures describe results; how hard the course feels to you is a separate question.
Can you use a calculator on the AP CSA exam?
No. Computer Science A isn’t one of the exams where College Board’s policy permits a calculator; only a student with an approved accommodation may use a four-function one. For the coding itself, Bluebook gives you the Java Quick Reference instead.
Can I score an older AP CSA exam with this calculator?
Yes, roughly. Pre-2026 exams asked 40 multiple-choice questions and scored each of the four free-response questions out of 9, so scale both: 30 right out of 40, times 42/40, is 31.5, so enter 32, and multiply each 9-point score by 7/9 (questions 1 and 2), 5/9 (question 3) or 6/9 (question 4). Because the tasks changed, treat the result as a ballpark.
When do AP CSA scores come out?
College Board releases them in July, so July 2027 for the May 12 exam. You’ll find yours by signing in to the same College Board account you use for My AP.
Why does another AP CSA scoring calculator give me a different score?
Check its free-response box first. If it asks for points out of 36, or for 9 on each question, it’s built for the pre-2026 exam and undervalues what you earn today. Then compare lines: many tools put a 5 near 78% of the composite, about nine points above ours, so a result in the high 60s or low 70s can be a 4 there and a 5 here.
Do you need programming experience before AP CSA?
No. College Board says the course has no formal prerequisites and doesn’t expect you to have studied computer science or programming before. It does expect problem-solving and logical reasoning, and the whole course is taught in Java.
