AP Spanish · Speaking task

Simulated Conversation — AP Spanish la tarea 3.

Task 3 of AP Spanish: a 5-turn conversation with a recorded interlocutor. 20 seconds per turn. The trick is having connector phrases ready so you don’t freeze.

Updated May 2026Part of AP Spanish Resources

The task

You see an outline of a conversation (your role + your prompts). You hear a recorded interlocutor say their lines. After each, you have 20 seconds to respond.

Five turns total. After all five, scoring stops — your responses become the rubric input.

The four moves per turn

Acknowledge
“Claro que sí…” / “Gracias por la invitación…” / “Me alegra mucho…”
Answer
Address the explicit question or request in the prompt.
Expand
Add one concrete detail — a reason, an example, a follow-up.
Ask back
(Optional but high-scoring.) ¿[Pregunta corta]?

How to use the 4 moves

You don’t have to hit all 4 on every turn. Aim for 3 of 4 per response — acknowledge + answer + expand is the safe baseline. Add the question-back when you have time.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers — written by humans, not a chatbot.

What if I freeze mid-turn?

Use a connector to buy time: “Bueno, mira…”, “A ver…”, “Pues, en mi caso…”. These all count as fluency, not filler, on the rubric.

Do I need formal (usted) or informal (tú)?

Match the interlocutor. They’ll use one or the other; mirror it.
