Frequently asked questions

Quick answers — written by humans, not a chatbot.

How is the APUSH curve different from other subjects?

Every AP subject has its own MCQ count, FRQ rubric, and cut-score thresholds. AP U.S. History uses 55 MCQ questions and 5 FRQ sections. The cutoff for a 5 is ≥68 composite points.

What if my Progress Check scores don't match this calculator?

Progress Checks are unscaled — they don’t apply the same curve as the real exam. The calculator here uses our estimated cut scores. The Progress Check walkthroughs explain the gap.

Is the curve different each year?

Slightly. The College Board adjusts cut scores year-to-year so the same final score reflects the same mastery. Our thresholds are reasonable estimates, not official values.
