Identify a buffer
Look for a weak acid and its conjugate base in comparable amounts — or a weak base with its conjugate acid.
Read a titration curve
The steep vertical region contains the equivalence point; the flattest region is the buffer zone.
Half-equivalence reasoning
At half-equivalence, pH = pKa. This is a free answer if you spot it.
Predict equivalence pH
Strong-strong gives pH 7; weak acid with strong base gives pH above 7; weak base with strong acid gives below 7.

Where students lose the most points

Using strong-acid math on a weak acid
A weak acid does not fully dissociate, so [H⁺] is not equal to the acid concentration.
Confusing equivalence and half-equivalence
Equivalence is complete neutralisation; half-equivalence is where pH = pKa.
Assuming every equivalence point is pH 7
Only for strong acid with strong base. The conjugate left behind shifts the others.
Forgetting pH + pOH = 14
Many questions give you pOH and expect you to convert.
Calling any acid-and-salt mixture a buffer
It needs a weak conjugate pair in meaningful amounts, not just any two solutes.
