Diagnose the bias

If a treatment is imposed it is an experiment; if variables are only measured it is observational.
Scope of inference
Random sampling generalises to a population; random assignment supports a cause-and-effect claim.
Confounding identification

Where students lose the most points

Confusing stratified and cluster sampling
Stratified samples from every group; cluster selects whole groups. They are opposites in intent.
Claiming causation from an observational study
Only a randomised experiment supports a cause-and-effect conclusion.
Confusing random sampling with random assignment
Sampling enables generalisation; assignment enables causation. They do different jobs.
Describing randomisation vaguely
Explain how you would actually randomise, not just that you would.
Overlooking confounding
An association can be driven by a lurking variable neither one causes.
