Easiest & hardest AP classes, ranked
Some AP classes have a reputation for being brutal, others for being a breeze, and since 2024 the pass rates have stopped matching the rumors. What is the hardest AP class? By pass rate in 2026 it is AP Music Theory, at 59 percent, not AP Physics 1, which now passes 68 percent.
What makes an AP class hard
A class can be hard in four separate ways, and one pass rate flattens all of them.

What is the hardest AP class?
By pass rate, AP Music Theory. In 2026, 59 percent of its students scored a 3 or higher, the lowest of the 40 AP exams College Board publishes. AP Statistics follows at 62 percent, AP Computer Science Principles at 63 percent and AP Calculus AB at 65 percent.
AP Physics 1 is the exam most difficulty lists still name, and it has not held the bottom since 2024. It passed 45.6 percent in 2023 and 47.3 percent in 2024, then 67.3 percent in 2025 and 68 percent in 2026. The instinct behind that reputation is not entirely wrong, though: 17 percent of its students still score a 1, the fourth-highest share of any AP exam. It is no longer hard to pass, and it is still easy to fail badly.
The other courses that usually fill out a hardest-AP list have moved just as far. AP United States History now passes 74 percent, AP United States Government 76 percent, AP English Literature 73 percent, AP Chemistry 75 percent and AP Environmental Science 69 percent. Four of those five sit above the all-exam average of 71 percent.
What is the easiest AP class?
By pass rate, AP Research at 90 percent and AP Seminar at 88 percent. Both are AP Capstone courses assessed on research projects and presentations rather than one timed exam, which makes them a different kind of work rather than a lighter one.
Among the traditional exams, AP Chinese Language and Culture (85 percent) and AP Spanish Language and Culture (83 percent) are highest, and both draw large numbers of heritage speakers. AP Japanese looks like it belongs with them and does not, at 72 percent.
By content rather than by pass rate, AP Psychology (74 percent) and AP Comparative Government (70 percent) are the usual recommendations for a first AP. AP Human Geography is the one people get wrong. It has the reputation of a starter course and one of the six lowest pass rates on the board, at 66 percent.

Why the rankings changed
If you have read that AP Physics 1 passes fewer than half of its students, that was true, and College Board changed it deliberately.
Between 2022 and 2024 College Board replaced the way it sets AP score standards. The older method asked a panel of ten to eighteen college faculty to estimate what students should be able to do. The replacement, evidence-based standard setting, uses performance data from the exam itself together with input from hundreds of college faculty. College Board reports that the process consistently found 60 to 80 percent of students in a given AP subject already demonstrating the competence a score of 3 is meant to represent.
Its own accounting splits the 40 courses three ways. Twenty-six were already inside that band and were confirmed unchanged. Nine sat below it and had their standards raised: AP World History, AP English Literature and AP Biology in 2022, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics and AP Chemistry in 2023, and AP United States Government, AP United States History and AP European History in 2024. Five more were held back until their exams were revised: AP English Language, AP Environmental Science, AP Human Geography, AP Latin and AP Physics 1.
All five of those moved in 2025. AP Physics 1 rose 20.0 percentage points, AP English Language 19.6, AP Environmental Science 15.1, AP Human Geography 8.6 and AP Latin 2.1.
That is why most hardest-AP lists are wrong in the same direction. Every one of the six subjects those lists typically name is a subject College Board has since re-standardized: four of the nine, and two of the five.
Why pass rates can mislead
A high pass rate often measures the students, not the exam. AP Calculus BC passes 82 percent because the students who reach Calculus BC have already worked through two years of calculus-track math. College Board makes the same argument about AP Chemistry, attributing its 75 percent pass rate to how self-selecting that group of students is.
It runs the other way too. AP Human Geography draws ninth-graders sitting their first AP exam, and its rate reflects that as much as the content does.
Passing is also not the same as acing. AP Seminar passes 88 percent of students while 10 percent score a 5, a gap of 78 points. AP Computer Science A is the most polarized exam on the board: 25 percent score a 5 and 23 percent score a 1. Difficulty is personal, and the useful question is not which AP is hardest but which one is hardest for you. The table above cannot answer that.
How to choose your AP classes
Start with where you are. Most students take one or two AP courses as sophomores and three or four as juniors and seniors, and the prerequisite chain matters more than the ranking: AP Calculus BC assumes the math that comes before it, and AP Physics 1 assumes algebra you are comfortable using under time pressure.
Then weigh the things a pass rate cannot see. Whether your school has taught the course before, how many other heavy courses land in the same year, how much writing you are already carrying, and whether the subject is one you want to keep doing. A course you find interesting is easier to finish than an easy course you resent.
Finally, check what the score is actually worth to you. Credit policies differ by institution, so the AP College Credit Guide is worth reading before you commit, and you can set a target with the AP test score predictor so you know what a good result looks like before exam day.

Pass rates on this page are the share of students scoring 3 or higher. The 2026 figures come from College Board’s published 2026 score distributions and are rounded by College Board to whole percentages, so no student counts are published with them yet. The 2023 to 2025 figures come from the score distribution files on AP Central. The standard-setting history is from College Board’s score setting and scoring documentation. Updated September 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers, checked against College Board.
What is the hardest AP class?
By pass rate, AP Music Theory. In 2026, 59 percent of its students scored a 3 or higher, the lowest of the 40 AP exams College Board publishes. AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Principles and AP Calculus AB are next.
Is AP Physics 1 still the hardest AP class?
No, and it has not been since 2024. AP Physics 1 passed 45.6 percent in 2023 and 47.3 percent in 2024, then 67.3 percent in 2025 and 68 percent in 2026. It does still have one of the highest shares of students scoring a 1, at 17 percent.
What is the hardest AP exam to get a 5 on?
AP 3-D Art and Design, where 7 percent of students scored a 5 in 2026, then AP Seminar and AP Computer Science Principles at 10 percent each. A high pass rate and a high 5 rate are close to unrelated.
Why did AP pass rates go up?
College Board changed how it sets the score standards. Between 2022 and 2024 it moved to evidence-based standard setting, which uses exam performance data and input from hundreds of college faculty instead of a small panel. Nine subjects had their standards raised, and five more followed once their exams were revised.
What is the easiest AP class?
By pass rate, AP Research at 90 percent and AP Seminar at 88 percent, both AP Capstone courses assessed on projects rather than a timed exam. Among the traditional exams, AP Chinese and AP Spanish Language are highest.
How many AP classes should I take?
Enough to stay challenged without falling behind. Most students build from one or two as sophomores to three or four as juniors and seniors, and what matters more than the count is whether your school supports the courses you pick.
