How AP English Literature is scored.
College Board splits the exam into two sections and publishes exactly what each is worth. Everything this calculator does follows from the table below.
| Section | Questions | Weight | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| I. Multiple choice | 55 | 45% | 60 minutes |
| II. Free response | 3 essays, 6 points each | 55% | 2 hours |
The exam runs 3 hours in total, and there is no separate reading period: you get 2 hours for the three essays, with College Board recommending about 40 minutes each. Your multiple-choice total is simply the number you got right, because nothing is deducted for a wrong answer.
To reach a composite out of 100, each section is scaled to its published weight. All 55 multiple-choice answers together are worth 45 points, so one correct answer adds about 0.82. All 18 essay points together are worth 55 points, so one essay point adds about 3.06. That makes a single essay point worth roughly 3.7 correct multiple-choice answers, which is the one piece of arithmetic worth carrying into the exam room.
The composite score conversion chart.
These are the thresholds this calculator uses. They are apcurve estimates. College Board publishes no conversion chart and no cut scores for AP English Literature, so every calculator you find online, this one included, is working from the published section weights rather than from an official table.
| AP score | Composite (our estimate) | One combination that gets there |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 68 to 100 | 40 of 55 multiple choice, plus 15 of 18 on the essays |
| 4 | 54 to 67 | 33 of 55 multiple choice, plus 12 of 18 on the essays |
| 3 | 40 to 53 | 26 of 55 multiple choice, plus 9 of 18 on the essays |
| 2 | 26 to 39 | 20 of 55 multiple choice, plus 6 of 18 on the essays |
| 1 | 0 to 25 | Below the 2 threshold |
If you check a second calculator and get a different composite, the scale is usually why. Across the sites currently ranking for this term, the composite is variously reported out of 100, out of 120 and out of 150. A composite of 78 on one site and 110 on another can describe the same performance, so compare predicted 1 to 5 scores rather than composite numbers.
Checked against College Board primary sources: the phrases cut score, scaled score and score conversion appear nowhere in the 176-page Course and Exam Description, and no College Board exam page publishes a raw-to-scaled table for this subject.
Is the AP English Literature exam curved?
No. College Board states it plainly in the Course and Exam Description for this course: “AP Exams are not norm-referenced or graded on a curve.” They are criterion-referenced, which means every student who meets the standard for a given score receives it, however many students that turns out to be. Your result does not depend on how the rest of the country did.
What actually happens is that the standard for each score is set through a process College Board calls Evidence Based Standard Setting. The points you need are anchored to what college students score on the same questions, to performance that predicts success in the next college course, and to what college faculty say each grade should require. College Board calls the resulting thresholds cut points, and sets them so that, in its words, a 3 this year reflects the same level of achievement as a 3 last year. Read how College Board sets AP score standards for the full process.
Two published facts are worth putting side by side. College Board says the exam itself is held deliberately steady, with “consistent question types, weighting, and scoring guidelines every year” and a consistent range of passage difficulty across versions. Its own results, meanwhile, move a great deal: the share of students scoring 3 or higher was 49.7% in 2019, 43.9% in 2021, 77.9% in 2022 and 74.2% in 2025.
College Board does not explain that swing, and neither will we. The practical point is narrower: a conversion chart built from an older year is built for a year whose results looked different, which is exactly why the chart above is labelled an estimate.
The three essays, and how each is scored out of 6.
The calculator asks for three essay scores out of 6, so here is what those 6 points are. College Board sets the same three questions every year, each worth 6 points, each with about 40 minutes recommended.
| Question | What you write | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Q1. Poetry Analysis | An interpretation of a given poem, argued from the text | 6 |
| Q2. Prose Fiction Analysis | An interpretation of a given prose passage | 6 |
| Q3. Literary Argument | An argument about a work you choose yourself | 6 |
All three are marked on the same three rows, which is why one rubric covers the whole section.
| Row | Points available | Roughly what it rewards |
|---|---|---|
| A. Thesis | 0 to 1 | A defensible interpretation, stated as a claim |
| B. Evidence and commentary | 0 to 4 | Evidence from the text, and reasoning that explains it |
| C. Sophistication | 0 to 1 | Complexity of thought sustained across the essay |
Because row B carries four of the six points, most of the distance between a 3 and a 5 on an essay is evidence and commentary rather than the thesis sentence. Note too that the essays are marked on analytic rubrics now, not the holistic ones used on older papers, so an essay score from a very old practice test is not directly comparable.
Taking both English exams? The AP English Language and Composition score calculator works the same way on different numbers: 45 multiple-choice questions instead of 55, and a 15-minute reading period that AP English Literature does not have.
What your predicted score is worth.
In 2025, the most recent year College Board has published in full, 416,531 students took AP English Literature. The mean score was 3.24 and 74.2% scored 3 or higher, split 16.2% fives, 26.9% fours, 31.0% threes, 15.9% twos and 10.0% ones. Provisional 2026 figures put the 3-or-higher rate at roughly 73 to 75%, and College Board is still updating them.
College Board describes a 5 as extremely well qualified, a 4 as well qualified and a 3 as qualified, mapping those to college grades of A, B and C. What that actually earns you varies by institution rather than by score alone, so check the policy where you are applying: our guide to AP course credit covers how to look it up.
If the prediction is lower than you wanted, the next exam is on Wednesday 5 May 2027 and it is taken entirely in Bluebook, with both sections submitted digitally at the end. The AP Lit exam guide walks through the format and how to prepare for each section.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers, checked against College Board.
Why do AP Lit score calculators give me different numbers?
Because College Board publishes no conversion chart, every calculator estimates from the published section weights, and they do not all use the same scale. Among the sites ranking for this term the composite is reported out of 100, out of 120 and out of 150, so two tools can describe identical performance with completely different composite numbers. Compare the predicted 1 to 5, not the composite.
What if my Progress Check scores do not match this calculator?
They are not meant to. College Board calls Progress Checks formative: they are built to show which skills are weak, and they are never converted into a 1 to 5. This calculator estimates an exam score from exam weights, which is a different job, so a gap between the two is expected rather than a sign that either is wrong.
Do I lose points for guessing on the AP English Literature multiple choice?
No. College Board states that the total number of correct responses equals the multiple-choice score, so a wrong answer costs you nothing that leaving it blank would not. That is also why this tool asks only for the number you got right. Answer all 55.
Has the AP English Literature exam changed since my practice test was written?
Yes, in two ways that both affect a raw score. Since Fall 2024 the multiple-choice questions have four answer choices instead of five, so a five-option practice test comes from an older exam and its raw score is not directly comparable. The exam is also fully digital now, taken in Bluebook, with both sections submitted automatically at the end.
Is AP English Literature scored the same way as AP English Language?
Almost, but not quite. Both weight multiple choice at 45% and the essays at 55%, and both set three essays worth 6 points each. AP English Literature has 55 multiple-choice questions where AP English Language has 45, and AP English Language gives you a 15-minute reading period that AP English Literature does not: your 2 hours cover all three essays.
