Is AP Physics 1 hard? Yes, but not for the reason you have read.
In the decade to 2024, fewer than half of AP Physics 1 students passed in nine years out of ten. That changed in 2025. College Board now reports 68% scoring a 3 or higher, up from 47.3% two years earlier. The exam is still hard, and the reason was never the arithmetic. The short answer
Yes, AP Physics 1 is hard. The evidence people usually give for that is out of date.
The course was rewritten for 2025, and the scores moved further in one year than in the whole decade before it. 47.3% of students earned a 3 or higher in 2024. In 2025 it was 67.3%, and in 2026 it was 68%. Roughly one student in three still does not pass, so the difficulty is real. It is just not the difficulty the reputation describes, and the reputation is what most of the internet is still repeating.

These are worth checking against the source, because a good deal of what is currently published is wrong. Ranked lists still call AP Physics 1 the hardest AP exam using its 2024 pass rate, and Bing’s AI answer reports a 2026 pass rate of about 55% with a 14% five rate, which matches no year College Board has ever released.
What actually makes it hard
The mathematics is algebra, and a four-function, scientific or graphing calculator is allowed on both sections. What the exam tests instead is whether you can defend an answer in words.
The paper runs three hours: 42 multiple-choice questions in 85 minutes, then four free-response questions in 95 minutes, weighted evenly at 50% each. The four are Mathematical Routines worth 10 points, Translation Between Representations worth 12, Experimental Design and Analysis worth 10, and Qualitative/Quantitative Translation worth 8. How hard is AP Physics 1 next to Physics 2 and Physics C?

Physics 1 is still the lowest-scoring of the four AP physics exams, so the direction of the old reputation survives even though its size does not. Physics C uses calculus and is normally taken later in the sequence, alongside or after a calculus course, which is a difference in who sits it as much as in what it asks.
The comparison students actually make is with chemistry, and it now runs the other way. AP Chemistry passed 75% of its candidates in 2026 against Physics 1’s 68%, so the course with the fiercer reputation is now the one more students get through. Who should take it
If you have finished Algebra 2 or are taking it now, the mathematics will not be what stops you. That is the prerequisite the course is built around, and nothing on the exam goes past it.
If this is your first physics course, you are in the ordinary case rather than a disadvantaged one. Physics 1 is designed as a first course, and the reasoning it asks for is new to almost everyone sitting it, including students who arrive with strong grades in mathematics.
If you are quick at calculation and slow at explaining your working, this is the exam that will find that out. It is the single profile the format is hardest on, and it is also the most fixable, because writing justifications is a skill you can practise directly.
How to do well
Practise the justification separately from the calculation. Work a problem, then write the sentence that says why the method applies, and mark that sentence as if it were the whole answer. Do the same with experimental design, which is the part least likely to appear in a textbook problem set.
