Graph interpretation
The most common Unit 1 question type. Identify what the slope and the area represent before reading options.
Sign reasoning
Negative velocity means moving in the negative direction; negative acceleration does not always mean slowing down.
Free-fall reasoning
At the top of a thrown object’s path velocity is zero but acceleration is still g downward.
Projectile questions
Horizontal velocity is constant; vertical accelerates. Time is the shared variable.
Matching graph shapes
Given a position graph, choose the matching velocity graph. Think slope, not shape.

Unit 1 free response usually gives a motion scenario or a graph and asks you to describe, calculate, and justify. Points come from stating which kinematic relationship applies and why, keeping signs and directions consistent, and explaining reasoning in words alongside the algebra.

Where students lose the most points

Assuming negative acceleration means slowing
An object speeds up when velocity and acceleration share a sign, regardless of what that sign is.
Thinking acceleration is zero at the top of a throw
Velocity is zero there; acceleration is still 9.8 m/s² downward.
Confusing distance and displacement
Displacement is a vector and can be smaller than distance travelled, or zero.
Using kinematic equations when acceleration is not constant
They only apply for constant acceleration — check the graph first.
Mixing projectile components
Horizontal and vertical motions are independent; only time is shared.

How to work through this unit

On any motion graph question, write “slope = ” and “area = ” in the margin before looking at the answer options. Most Unit 1 questions are testing exactly one of those two things.
