Line of reasoning

The sequence of claims that carries an argument from opening to conclusion.

Coherence

Whether each sentence and paragraph follows logically from the last.

Transitions

The words and phrases that signal relationships — contrast, cause, concession, addition.

Methods of development

Narration, comparison, cause and effect, definition, exemplification.

Paragraph function

What a given paragraph is doing for the argument as a whole.

Best transition

Identify the logical relationship between the two sentences first, then pick the word that signals it. “However” and “therefore” are not interchangeable.

Paragraph purpose

“The third paragraph primarily serves to…” — the answer describes a function, not a topic.

Sentence placement

Where a new sentence belongs. Read the surrounding sentences and follow the thread.

Organizational strategy

Recognising the method of development the writer is using and why it suits the argument.

Coherence repair

Which revision fixes a break in the reasoning — usually the one that restores a missing logical step.

The Progress Check FRQ

Organization matters in all three AP Lang essays. The line of reasoning is explicitly part of the evidence and commentary row, so essays that present strong evidence in a jumbled order still lose points. Rhetorical analysis in particular rewards noticing how a writer structures their case, not just which devices appear.
