Where students lose the most points

Confusing exponential and logistic growth
Exponential has no ceiling; logistic levels off at carrying capacity.
Treating energy and biomass as the same thing
The 10% rule is about energy transfer, which is why biomass pyramids can look unusual.
Mixing up commensalism and mutualism
Mutualism benefits both; commensalism benefits one and leaves the other unaffected.
Saying a species “wants” to adapt
Describe selection pressures acting on populations, not intent.
Ignoring indirect effects
Removing a predator affects plants too, through the herbivores in between.

How to work through this unit

For any food-web disruption question, trace the effect both upward and downward from the species removed. The answer is usually the indirect consequence, not the obvious one.
